With no less than 7 awareness observances across 2022 that focus on environmental issues; for tackling climate change, soil protection, plastic reduction, composting and more global warming and the challenge of protecting our planet is real.  How can we educate ourselves to protect our natural resource and be conscious of our choices when considering the climate, the environment and doing our bit to reduce pollution?

The earth is getting warmer each year causing an ecosystem crisis. Ravaging weather conditions that have caused damage and fatalities are becoming commonplace.

World Ocean Day to raise awareness of water pollution issues

Today on the 8th June, the focused environmental issue we celebrate is World Ocean Day. The 2022 theme is Revitalisation, Collective Action for the Ocean. Did you know that the ocean’s huge body of saltwater spans 71% of Earth’s surface?

As detailed by National Geographic:

“The planet has one global ocean, though oceanographers and the countries of the world have traditionally divided it into five distinct regions: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern oceans.”

A healthy Ocean has an abundance of marine life. To balance the climate, 30% of our planet’s lands, waters, and ocean need better protection. 2022 data shows that less than 17% of land and 8% of the ocean worldwide is currently protected. World Ocean Day is taking action to this climate crisis to protect 30% of land, water, and ocean by 2030 in their campaign ‘30x30’.

In practical terms as humans don’t have in-built gills, we largely live on the land and therefore action can begin at home. Adopting an environmentally friendly greener lifestyle is simple and creates good vibes. You can help to protect the environment by thinking a little more about how and where you shop, how you consume energy and water and dispose of your waste.

Minimising your carbon footprint

Adapting behaviour through more positive daily habits and more awareness and collective action on fossil fuels and their impact will contribute to reducing the level of harmful greenhouse gases and slow down the rate of global warming to protect our environment.

There are so many ways to do this. Here are a few ideas:

• Be water smart and only use what you really need

• Know how and what we can recycle (and where to go)

• Reduce your food footprint and buy organically sourced produce

• Avoid consumable foods that have been affected by pesticides and other chemicals

• Reuse, repurpose and recycle containers

• Try a herb and veggie patch and enjoy the emotional reward for providing for yourself

• Get out into your environment and experience national parks, forests and the plant and animal life you are helping to protect

• Car-pool to your workplace, ride your bike, or take the bus/tram/train

• Support local businesses. It’s a great thing to know where your goods have come from and that you aren’t supporting multinational businesses that don’t have great corporate social responsibility. These big supply chain operations have a detrimental effect on our environment.

What positive impact can organisations have through environmental awareness action?

By encouraging the organisations we work for to be more environmentally and socially conscious through similar environmentally supportive initiatives in the workplace, we can really make a difference. For example:

• Leasing offices in highly energy-efficiency buildings

• Going paperless

• Reducing air travel in favour of remote working solutions

• Using goods and services from ethical producers, such as Who Gives a Crap toilet paper that we support as they are an ingenious (and funny) bunch of talent that give 50% of their profits to build toilets in the developing world. Now that you know this, why would you go anywhere else for your loo roll?
